How we teach French

At Callands Community Primary School we believe learning a modern foreign language is an exciting introduction to other cultures and aids pupils’ curiosity whilst deepening their understanding of the world. Our teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in French and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

The teaching of modern foreign languages provides opportunities for pupils to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking as well as developing problem solving skills.

We use the National Curriculum to plan our Languages curriculum.

What your child will learn

  • To understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic source
  • To speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • To write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • A positive, enthusiastic attitude to language learning within a secure and supportive environmen
