Maths
The basic skills of mathematics are vital for the life opportunities of our children. Our aim is for all children to think mathematically, enabling them to reason and solve problems in a range of contexts.
At Callands Community Primary School, our Mathematics curriculum has been developed to ensure every child can achieve in mathematics. Children can experience a sense of achievement as they solve a problem for the first time, discover different solutions and make links between different areas of mathematics. It provides pupils with a deep understanding of the subject through a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. This ensures pupils fully understand what they are learning rather than just learning to repeat routines without grasping what is happening.
All year groups begin the year by studying Number, with an emphasis on place value. This is vital in primary school maths as it is intrinsically linked to many other areas of maths; a solid understanding of place value is vital in order to allow children to competently add, subtract, multiply and divide amongst other things. From here, each year group covers topics set out in the National Curriculum as well as incorporating consolidation and assessment activities to evaluate children’s learning and develop knowledge and understanding.
