EYFS (Reception)
PLODs
At Callands, we pride ourselves on planning effectively to meet children’s needs and interests. The EYFS framework states that 'practitioners must consider the individual needs, interests and stage of each child in their care, and must use this information to plan a challenging and enjoyable experience for each child'. To achieve this, we plan all of our learning around children’s interests using a PLOD (Possible Lines of Development) planning sheet. We use our knowledge of the child alongside observations of the child and conversations with parents and carers to discover the children’s unique interests. We then use this information to plan activities to ensure every child is challenged and engaged in their learning. Please see the examples below.
Key Stage 1 (Y1 and Y2)
Introduction
In Key Stage 1 we follow a rich and varied curriculum that allows children to gain key skills and knowledge whilst exploring a wide range of topics. Class-based learning is often supported by trips, visitors, outdoor learning, ‘themed’ days/weeks and ‘hands-on’ activities to bring learning alive for the children. Computing is taught as both a discrete subject, where we equip children with the basic skills they need, and is used as an integral learning tool across the curriculum.

In addition to the Key Stage 1 curriculum, we also join in with our whole school themed weeks. During these exciting weeks, the whole school gets involved in a particular theme (e.g. Maths Through Art, Poetry, Healthy Eating) and we use these opportunities to get really creative with our learning, with most lessons linking to the chosen theme. Children and staff thoroughly enjoy these special weeks.
The Home Reading Scheme used throughout the school is Oxford Reading Tree. The National Strategy for Letters and Sounds is continued from the EYFS to KS1, supported by the LCP Phonics Scheme and PhonicsPlay.co.uk.
We have put together a number of web site links which we believe are helpful in supporting children's learning, in particular literacy and numeracy out of school. In addition the school pays a subscription to DB Primary to enable the children to access these Virtual Learning Environment Library resources out of school. All children are given the log in details to enable them to access these sites. Homework can also be found on the VLE for every year group each week.

Mathematics is integral to all aspects of life and therefore we aim to ensure that the children develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them. We ensure that mathematics is taught in a fun and interactive way which is related to real-life situations and problems. It is important that the children don’t just learn a process, and therefore we encourage them to explain their reasoning and why they have chosen a particular method. Time is taken to introduce the children to a range of written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, all of which are clear and easy for the children to fully understand. If you are unsure of the methods we use in school, please don’t hesitate to ask your class teacher.

Upper Key Stage 2 (Y5 & Y6)
Literacy is taught daily, with specific emphasis on reading and writing in a wide range of different text types. Children experience a wide range of texts and are inspired to write by varying stimuli, including stories, drama, films, music, computer games, TV programmes, news items and poetry. Wherever possible the literacy work is linked to the theme of the half term. Handwriting and spellings are also taught weekly. Children also experience numeracy lessons every day. Each term the curriculum covers the aspects of place value, maths methods for the four operations, shape and space, data handling, fractions, decimals, percentages, number sequences, measures and co-ordinates. Word problems are posed through every aspect of the Numeracy curriculum in order to ensure that our pupils are able to apply their skills to problem solving tasks.
